  2. The Hunt • What is sealing? • Seal hunting Is the personal or commercial hunt of seals • It started with Native Americans hunting for seals • it was a kind of right to manhood. • Today it has evolved into a massive industry with a huge commercial market.

  3. Why it happens • The fur is considered very valuable because of its warmth and its resistance to water • Typically sold to European markets • The Canadian Sealing industry rakes an annual income of about 16.5 million dollars. • The seal meat is sold to the Asian markets and the oil is taken as a fish oil supplement

  4. Animal Rights Claims • Even though Canada is not the only country that participates in the Sealing industry it is the most famous due to the constant animal rights protests. • Animal Right Protesters think the hakapik is inhumane and doesn’t always kill the animal. • This could resulting in the hunter skinning the seal alive.

  5. Controversy • Not every part of the seal is Utilized. • Most of the upset for Seal Hunting is that hunters will kill specifically for the fur and will throw away the meat. • Global Warming may threaten lifestyle of the Seals. • The death statistics of the hunt do not include the seals that have been injured by hunters but got away. Only to die later.

  6. The Hakapik • Basically a club • The proper method is to hit the seal directly on the forehead. • This process will crush the skull and supposedly kill it instantly.

  7. The Protesters • The humane Society international is the chief protestor of the Canadian Seal hunt. • Their mascot is a young white seal known as a white coat… Even though they are illegal to kill at such a young age. • HSI calls for a boycott of all Canadian seafood… Unfortunately the Asian and American markets won’t participate.

  8. Celebrity Attention • Even though Harp Seals are not an endangered species and their population is constantly monitored by the government • Many celebrities varying from Paul McCartney and Paris Hilton have done concerts to speak out against the seal hunt. • Unfortunately Canadian Seal Hunters don’t care.
