  1. The De Soto & Moscoso Expedition In 1542 Hernando De Soto sets off from Florida to the interior of the deep south looking for lands of great Indian wealth.

  2. Moscoso takes over • De Soto dies near the MIssissippi River and Moscoso takes charge of the expedition.

  3. The road traveled

  4. East Texas and the Caddo Indians • Moscoso and his men attempt to reach Mexico City via a land route. • They cross into East Texas meeting the Caddo Indians, who welcome them by saying “Tay-yas, Tay-yas” which means friend. • This is where we get the word Tejas… or Texas.

  5. The Return to Mexico • Moscoso and his men tired of traversing the Texas landscape, return to the Mississippi River and build boats to try and sail back instead. • The historical significance of the Moscoso adventure was similar to Coronados. NO Indian wealth found in Texas, so Spain pulls back from Texas.
