A pilgrim is someone who goes on a pilgrimage. This is a journey to a holy place. A pilgrim did this to honour a Saint or for the good of their soul. Some pilgrims travelled to the Holy Land, however, this was stopped by Muslim Turks in the 11th C. As a result the Crusades began. Note What is a Pilgrim?

Crusade means a holy war 1st Crusade started by Pope Urban II in 1095 Aim: win back Jerusalem and the Holy Land from the ‘unbelievers’ – The Muslims Lords and knights from Christian Europe raised money and armies to go on the Crusade Total = 9 Crusades The Crusades
Why did people go? Belief they were doing God’s work Pope promised that their sins would be forgiven However, Some wanted to benefit from the valuable trading that went on in the Middle East. The Crusades
