Senior Citizens • Retirement-age citizens are highest growing demographic in US • 1967: congress bans age discrimination; 1975-denied federal funds to institutions discriminating against 40+ workers • 1978-compulsory retirement age is 70; now retirement is free for all ages • Don’t need intent to prove age discrimination • SS payments aren’t supposed to sustain lifestyles
Americans with Disabilities • 1920’s-laws passed to help disabled vets of WWI • 1973-Rehabilitation Act adds people to list of Americans protected from discrimination • 1975-Education of all handicapped children Act allows free education to handicapped children that fits their needs • ADA-passed in 1990; requires “reasonable accommodations” and prevents employment discrimination against people with disabilities
Who is disabled? • 1998-Supreme court says ADA offers protection for people with AIDS • 1999-manageable physical impairments NOT protected (ie-poor eyesight fixed with glasses)
Gay Rights • Homophobia-fear and hatred of homosexuals • Lots of violence (Matthew Shepard) • Several million Americans are gay (even by conservative estimates) • 1993-”Don’t Ask, Don’t tell”
Court decisions on gay rights • 1986-SC allows states to ban homosexual relationships (Bowers v. Hardwick) • 2000-(Boy Scouts of America v. Dale) SC allows boy scouts to exclude gay men • 1996 (Romer v. Evans)-Supreme Court voids Colorado amendment saying gays are exempt from anti-discrimination laws • 2003- (Lawrence v. Texas)SC overturns Texas anti-sodomy laws and Bowers v. Hardwick
Gay Marriage • 1996-DOMA • VT and CT recognize civil unions • Several states also provide domestic partnership benefits • 2003-Massachusetts General Court legalizes gay marriage • Bush calls for amendment banning gay marriage (doesn’t happen)
