REVIEW • The time has come," He said. "The kingdom of God is near. Repent and believe the good news! Mark 1:15 • Kingdom is the reign & realm of God • Jesus demonstrated the kingdom • Power over devil, sickness, death, sin, lack (poverty), nature and natural laws
Mark 10:17-27 • Verse 17 • This man runs up to Jesus & falls on his knees and asks a question. • He is a religious man & a wealthy man • In spite of this, he realizes that something is missing • There is a sense of desperation in his behavior • He is lacking “eternal life”
Eternal = perpetual or everlasting • Life = as God created it in Eden • Not just a quantity of time, but a quality of life • Kingdom of God (Mark & Luke), Kingdom of heaven (Matthew) & Eternal Life (John) are the same concept • What must I do to inherit eternal life – how can I experience and enter the kingdom of God
Verse 18 • Why do you call Me good? • The man saw something in Jesus that he was lacking – did he think it was because Jesus was a good person? • Only God is good! - Jesus experienced the kingdom because He was life! Not because He was a good person.
Verse 19 • What commandments? • 10 Commandments G I V E ods mage ain R member My Ill Aunt Steals Fat Cats other K dultery lse ovet M Ill A Steal Fa C
Jesus refers to only the last 6 • These deal with outward actions toward one another or being a “good” person • Even though we can never be “good” enough without God, if we live a lifestyle contrary to His commands we will not experience or enter the kingdom! • Galatians 5:19-21
Verse 20 • The man was a religious man – living by the letter of the law • …for the letter kills, but the Spirit gives life. • 2 Corinthians 3:6 • Verse 21 • One thing you lack… • Jesus looks beyond the outward actions and hits the heart
Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The LORD does not look at the things man looks at. Man looks at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart. • 1 Samuel 16:7 • This man’s heart was divided between his wealth & his desire for eternal life • Wealth is not the issue, the issue is that wealth had a hold on him
Verse 22 • His desire for eternal life was eclipsed by his desire for wealth • If our desire to enter the kingdom of God is not greater than all other desires we will not experience or enter the kingdom • Verse 23 • Why is it hard? • Wealth has a strong attraction (Achan)
Verse 24 • Disciples were amazed because they thought wealth was a sign of God’s favor • God’s favor does not always come wrapped the way we expect it • It is just hard to enter the kingdom • But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it. • Matthew 7:14
Verse 25 • Camel was the largest animal used in the land in Jesus’ time • Needle was the smallest opening • This was a picture of how hard it is for a rich man to enter the kingdom • Verse 26 • How can anyone enter into the kingdom then???
Verse 27 • Only through God can anyone enter the kingdom • What is not possible with man is possible with God • If the man had gone to Christ and cried out, he would have entered in… • I do believe; help me overcome my unbelief! Mark 9:24
Application • Are you experiencing eternal life? • With the same desperation as that man, come to Jesus and ask Him how to get it • Deal with any “sin” issues • Let Him search your heart, as He did the man • Respond to His challenge – ask for His help when it is too hard for you to do it • Don’t walk away or settle for mediocrity!
