Geography of Korea • Peninsula- Juts out from Asia’s mainland • Very Mountainous • Farming Difficult- • Most Koreans live along coastal plain • Location on “China’s doorstep” • Cultural/technological influences • Cultural bridge linking China and Japan • Korean language not similar to Chinese- had own way of life before Chinese influence

  3. Korean Kingdoms • Unlike China, Korea had only three dynasties in its history • Shilla Dynasty (United Korea)- 668 to 918 • Koryo- 918-1392 • Choson- 1392-1910

  4. Chinese Influence • Korea was a tributary state of China • Adopted many Chinese traditions but preserved its own culture. • Confucian Ideals • Adapted Civil Service Exam to reflect their own system of inherited ranks (only aristocrats could take test)

  5. Buddhist Influence • Buddhism very influential in Korea • Produced a flood of Buddhist texts • Celadon- A porcelain with an unusual blue/green glaze

  6. Choson: The Longest Dynasty • Buddhist influence reduced  Confucianism • Hangul developed- Alphabet using symbols to represent the sounds of spoken Korean • Easier to use than the thousands of characters of written Chinese • Led to a high literacy rate

Postage Stamp • Create a postage stamp to commemorate the history of Korea • Your stamp must include • A colored picture/symbol representing the history of Korea on the front • The name of the country (Korea) • How much the stamp costs • A title for your image • A detailed description of your image and why you chose it on the back
