  3. Tough Customer • Brill is known for his tough personality. • Grew up in Queens • “Is English your first language?” • Responds to criticism for being both publisher and editor of the now defunct media magazine Custom with: “I’m a damn good editor.”

  4. A Law Media Mogul American Lawyer Media: Creates American Lawyer in 1979 Creates Courtroom Television Network in 1991 Creates Content in 1998

  5. Cameras in the Courtroom • 1991-1994 Federal Courts experiment with allowing cameras in court. • Cameras are allowed in district courts at judge’s discretion. • Steven Brill goes for it after jurors tell him they were hooked by the trial.

  6. Court TV • First Airs July 1, 1991 • Time Warner, Liberty Media and NBC • Original format airs only courtroom footage and some commentary. • “Journalist are probably the only people on the planet who make lawyers look good.”

  7. OJ Simpson Trial • The nine-month, 1995 trial garners first real interest for the station. • Jan. 26 the network scores a 4.2 rating, topping NBC and E!.

  8. Just Like MTV • After NBC sells its share of the station in 1998, alternative programming hits Court T.V. • Cops • Forensic Files • Hollywood Justice • Nancy Grace

  9. Brill to the Future • Leaves Court T.V. in 1997 with big bucks. • Creates Verified Identity Pass, a security system for airports to speed up traveler security checks. • Writes for Newsweek and teaches at Yale.
