The Middle Colonies • New Netherland: • Modern day New York • Originally explored by the Dutch in 1609 • Established trade with the Iroquois through Fort Orange (Albany) • 1621: Dutch East India Company established • 1625: New Amsterdam established (Modern New York City)
The Middle Colonies • New Netherland: • Was a major fur trading colony • Was slow to attract Dutch people • Attracted Germans, French, Scandinavians • Protestants, Catholics, Muslims, Jews • With the wide variety of ethnicities and religions caused one visitor to call it : “Confusion of tongues”
The Middle Colonies • New Netherland: • English eventually wanted to control New Netherland • King Charles authorized the capture of the colony by force, but the governor of New Netherland simply gave up. • The Duke of York now owned the area and named it: • New York • Names New Jersey after the British isle of Jersey
The Middle Colonies • Pennsylvania: • Was so named after William Penn • The land was given to a supporter of the new king, Charles II • The king insisted the land be called “Penn’s Woods” • William Penn eventually received more land from the Duke of York. • This land eventually became Delaware
