The Four Strokes in Swimming • Butterfly • Backstroke • Breaststroke • Freestyle
Individually or Individual Medley • The 4 Strokes Can be Swam Individually • Or Swam in an Individual Medley (IM)
Individual Medley (IM) • A Swimmer Swims all the strokes • IM order is: Butterfly, Backstroke, Breaststroke then Freestyle
There are Two Types of Relays • Medley Relay • Freestyle Relay
Medley Relay • Order in the Medley Relay: Backstroke, Breaststroke, Butterfly, Freestyle. • Each of the four swimmers swims their stroke for the required length of the relay.
Medley Relay Lengths • 200 meters or yards (Each swimmer would swim 2 laps) • 400 meters or yards (Each swimmer would swim 4 laps) • 800 meters or yards (Each swimmer would swim 8 laps)
Freestyle Relay • In this relay each swimmer just swims freestyle. • Same lengths as the medley.
Equipment to Use in Swimming • Swim Suit • Goggles (Optional) • Swim Cap (optional) But Recommended • Towel • Fin’s, Pull Buoy, Kickboard, Snorkel (Optional) These are used to get a better workout.
Reason’s To Swim • Swimming is a great cardiovascular activity. • It’s a life time sport. • It’s a great way to meet people. • Not an expensive sport.
