    10. The Crew Up to 8 or 10 The crew includes Commander Pilot Mission specialists Responsible for equipment and resources supporting the payloads during the flight Payload specialists Carry out the specific mission. In charge of the specific payload equipment. May or may not be astronauts

    11. Space Stations Orbiting laboratories Skylab - USA Mir - Russian International Space Station (ISS) Built with the aid of 16 countries Space shuttle transports astronauts, satellites and other materials to and from the ISS. The Space Station is the largest manned object ever sent into space http://www.pbs.org/spacestation/station/issfactsheet.htm http://www.nasa.gov/externalflash/ISSRG/http://www.pbs.org/spacestation/station/issfactsheet.htm http://www.nasa.gov/externalflash/ISSRG/

    12. Exploring Mars and the Moon Mars Global Surveyor Orbited Mars Mars Pathfinder Studied the surface Lunar Prospector Orbited the Moon, mapping its structure and composition.

    13. Future Missions Cassini probe Main Mission: 74 Orbits of Saturn, including 44 flybys of Titan completed its initial four-year mission to explore the Saturn System in June 2008. Now, the healthy spacecraft is working overtime on the Cassini Equinox Mission, seeking answer to new questions raised in Cassini’s first years at Saturn.

    14. James Webb Space Telescope Successor to the Hubble Space Telescope Proposed Launch Date: June 2013 With the largest telescope mirror ever placed in space—so large it must be folded during launch

    15. Everyday Space Technology Apollo Spinoffs http://www.sti.nasa.gov/tto/apollo.htmhttp://www.sti.nasa.gov/tto/apollo.htm

    16. Self Check Identify the main advantage of the space shuttle. It is a reusable spacecraft. Describe the importance of space shuttle–Mir docking missions. They allowed astronauts to practice a maneuver that would be needed to build the ISS. Explain how International Space Station is used. It will be used for long-term research projects. It could one day be a construction site for ships that go to the moon or Mars.

    17. Identify three ways that space technology is a benefit to everyday life. Benefits include better heart pacemakers, vision screening, cochlear implants and enhanced imaging systems. What makes the space shuttle more versatile than earlier spacecraft? It’s reusable and can carry cargo into orbit, including satellites. It can also retrieve objects from orbit ad take astronauts into orbit to repair satellites.
