1. Galatians 3:15-29 Goodbye, baby-sitter!
3. Review Gal 3:1-14 Driving questions - vv1-5
What is the basis of justification?
What is the basis of sanctification?
Judaizers
both are "faith PLUS obedience"
Paul
Justification by faith alone (vv6-14a)
Sanctification by faith alone (v14b)
4. Outline of 3:15-29 vv15-18 Silence objection #1
vv19-24 Silence objection #2
vv25-29 Show the implications
5. Objection #1 - vv15-18 "yeah, faith was enough for Abraham, but thats because he lived before the Mosaic Law was given. All of us now live after the Mosaic Law and therefore, unlike Abraham, we are responsible to follow it."
6. Objection #1 - vv15-18
7. Objection #1 - vv15-18
8. Objection #1 - vv15-18 Paul's answer:
v15 - compare to human contracts
v17 - later modification violates the nature of a covenant
v18 - adding obedience to promise also violates logic
v16 - and in case you were wondering, Gentiles are included, too.
9. Objection #1 - vv15-18 Conclusion:
Paul silences any objection that would say that Abrahams experience (justification and sanctification by faith alone) does not apply to this 1st century Gentile audience.
10. Objection #2 - vv19-24 "How can you follow this idiot who totally dismisses multiple books of the O.T. given by God Himself and used by our nation for 1500 years? Someone who thinks so little of Gods revealed standard isnt even worth listening to!"
11. Objection #2 - vv19-24 Two key questions:
Why was the law given? (v19)
Does Paul's view make it contrary to the promises of God? (v21)
12. Objection #2 - vv19-24 Paul's answer:
Recognize the law's shortcomings
mediators were required (v20)
it was only temporary (v23-25)
it could never give life (v21)
13. Objection #2 - vv19-24 How were people saved in the O.T.?
salvation is always by God
always on the basis of Christ's death
always on the condition of faith
but faith that's content has changed with time
Point: the law could never give life
14. Objection #2 - vv19-24 Paul's answer:
Recognize the law's shortcomings,
Also recognize its positive purposes
points out sin & consequences (v19)
confines all in prison of sin (v22)
Overall:
a babysitter for OT Israel
15. Implications - vv25-29 vv25-27 We're not "sons-in-training." We're full sons of God & heirs of the promises of Abraham.
vv28-29 So there's no such thing as a "spiritual elite" - all of us stand on equal footing before God!
16. Application If we already have everything through faith in Christ
Then there's no room in the Christian life for comparisons!
17. Application v28 - There is neither
aggie nor t-sip
A&M nor Blinn
4.0 nor 1.5
freshman nor senior
BUCs nor ASC
officer nor pledge
s.g. participant nor s.g. leader
summer job nor summer missions
secular job nor seminary
18. Application Comparison always trips you up
"I'm better"
"I'm worse"
"I'm average"
19. Application Fight comparison by proactively focusing on Christ!
personally apply scripture each week
then take thoughts of comparison captive
