K30 UAB Program • Survey Course • For beginning fellows (residents) • 20 hours over 2 week period • Clinical Research Training Program (CRTP) • Certificate program • 2 hours/week of didactic/interactive lectures over 1 year • Need a mentor(s) and a project • Project: “just an idea” OR funded project

  4. K30 UAB Program • Masters in Clinical Research • Degree program • Courses in SOPH • Need “protected” time, e.g. T32, K23 • Senior fellows, junior faculty members

  5. Loan Repayment for Clinical Research • 5 different loan repayment programs • Up to $35,000/year for educational debt for health professionals pursuing careers in clinical, pediatric, contraception and infertility, or health disparities research • Key requirements • doctoral-level degrees • devote 50% or more of time to non-profit or government-funded research • Have educational debt equaling at least 20% of institutional base salary • For details on requirements and application process: www.lrp.nih.gov

Pittman GCRCFunding Possibilities • Clinical Research Feasibility Funds (CReFF) • Foster junior faculty involvement in clinical research • Senior faculty changing career paths and proposing to conduct clinical research • Up to $20,000 for a one-year project period • Laboratory, personnel and patient-related costs of the project • Salary support not be available for PI • Additional year of funding may be made available based on the research priority and the recipients’ progress report

  11. Prioritizes projects for GCRC use NIH-funded clinical research MUST be given preference Designates Category of Protocol (A, B, D) Sets general policies Establishes admission policies Establishes charges for industry protocols Scientific Advisory Committee (SAC)

  12. Clinical and Translational Science Award (CTSA) • Goal #1 • Establish the CCTS to provide ACCESS (Assistance through Centralized Communication and Essential Support Services) to investigators to enhance clinical and translational research and collaboration.

  13. Clinical and Translational Science Award (CTSA) • Goal #2 • Train and develop clinical and translational investigators to become principal investigators and productive members of research teams.

  14. Clinical and Translational Science Award (CTSA) • Goal #3 • Facilitate utilization of existing resources and provide new resources for clinical and translational investigators.

  15. Clinical and Translational Science Award (CTSA) • Goal #4 • Emphasize research that is important given UAB’s unique geographic location and history (i.e., health disparities research) and that utilizes some of our unique strengths (i.e., outcomes research and drug discovery).

  16. Clinical and Translational Science Award (CTSA) • Goal #5 • Institute a Self-Monitoring and Improvement Program at the Center level and quality assurance at the University level.
