Background of Play • The play is a giddy fantasy with absurdist humor tackling the AIDS crisis of the 1980’s. The story is of the love and adventures of a brother and sister. • When Anna becomes diagnosed with ATD, Acquired Toilet Disease, a fatal new malady with a high risk factor, she and her brother, Carl, take flight to Europe. • After the audience is thrown through the ride of the adventures of the two siblings, the actual tragic circumstances are revealed in the final scene.
About Paula Vogel • Plays are famous for scatological humor, jokes about the body, and extremely plain talk. Uses comedic devices to bring across important messages of difficult topics in life. • Won the 1999 Pulitzer Prize of Drama for How I Learned to Drive. • The Baltimore Waltz is Paula Vogel’s homage to her brother Carl, who died of AIDS.

Sociological Questions • Does this “Gay/AIDS Play” have feminist undertones? • Can There be Comedy in AIDS? • How Do We Process Grief Through Humor? • Can an AIDS Play be both Laughable and Poignant?
Current Status • Play Has Been Cast and Character Building Exercises are underway. • Researching and writing Dramaturgical and Sociological Papers. • Dealing with logistics of Production of the Play. • Contacting and Organizing Donations and Funding for the World AIDS Fund and Cooley’s Anemia Foundation.
Goals for Second Semester • Completed Both Dramaturgical and Sociological Paper by First Week of February. • Concentration on Rehearsals and Production of Play. • Promotion of Show and More Work with Foundations. • Complete Director’s Notebook after Play Ends. • Put Entire Book together by Graduation!
