  2. Think About It … • What are ways people respond to grief? • Today’s lesson speaks to the issue of finding our way through the maze of grief

  3. Listen for how Martha dealt with grief. John 11:20-27 (NIV) When Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she went out to meet him, but Mary stayed at home. [21] "Lord," Martha said to Jesus, "if you had been here, my brother would not have died. [22] But I know that even now God will give you whatever you ask." [23] Jesus said to her, "Your brother will rise again." [24] Martha answered,

  4. Listen for how Martha dealt with grief. "I know he will rise again in the resurrection at the last day." [25] Jesus said to her, "I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will live, even though he dies; [26] and whoever lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this?" [27] "Yes, Lord," she told him, "I believe that you are the Christ, the Son of God, who was to come into the world."

  5. Hope in Jesus, Your Life • What did Mary and Martha do when they heard that Jesus was coming? • How did Martha express her grief to Jesus? • Compare what Jesus and Martha were saying about a resurrection, about Jesus

  6. Hope in Jesus, Your Life • Why do we question Jesus about His timing, His way of answering our needs? • Martha was probably filled with grief over Lazarus’ death. How can our emotions impact our ability to trust God’s sovereignty? • She may have been confused, discouraged, grieved about her brother’s death … But …  Martha clung to the basic Truth … Jesus is the Son of God  She was discovering also that … Jesus is the Resurrection and the Life

  7. Hope in Jesus, Your Life • Recall image from Four Spiritual Laws booklet • Our relationship with Christ is based on the Facts of the Truth and our Faith • Feelings (emotions) are nice but the train runs without a caboose

  8. Hope in Jesus, Your Life • With that in mind, why is grieving not the same as faithlessness? • Agree or disagree? Questioning God in the face of grief is not acceptable for a Christian

  9. Listen for Mary’s response when she saw Jesus. John 11:32-36 (NIV) When Mary reached the place where Jesus was and saw him, she fell at his feet and said, "Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died." [33] When Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews who had come along with her also weeping,

  10. Listen for Mary’s response when she saw Jesus. he was deeply moved in spirit and troubled. [34] "Where have you laid him?" he asked. "Come and see, Lord," they replied. [35] Jesus wept. [36] Then the Jews said, "See how he loved him!"

  11. Hope in Jesus, Your Friend • What did Mary do and say when Jesus finally arrived? • Mary had stayed at home and waited for Jesus. What do you think this might say about how easy it was for her to express emotions? • How did Jesus respond to the weeping by Mary and the others?

  12. Hope in Jesus, Your Friend • Why do you think Jesus was troubled, what grieved Him? • What does Jesus response to the scene around Him suggest to us about grief?

  13. Listen for Jesus specific actions in confronting death John 11:43-44 (NIV) When he had said this, Jesus called in a loud voice, "Lazarus, come out!" [44] The dead man came out, his hands and feet wrapped with strips of linen, and a cloth around his face. Jesus said to them, "Take off the grave clothes and let him go."

  14. Hope in the Power of Jesus • How did Jesus raise Lazarus from the dead? • What did Lazarus do when Jesus called to him? • What has Jesus promised us that we must believe and see His power demonstrated? • What did Jesus instruct people to do when Lazarus came out of the tomb?

Hope in the Power of Jesus • Why do you suppose Jesus told them to do this? • If you had been there when Jesus raised Lazarus from the dead, how do you think you might have responded?  We should be in just as much awe and praise Him just as much for the workings we see God do in our lives every day!

  16. Application • Many people feel helpless and hopeless as they face bereavement and death • Receive Jesus’ promise that He has dominion over death • Know that those who have died as believers are spiritually alive and with the Lord • When faced with grief, you need not feel helpless and hopeless

  17. Application • Be assured that Jesus empathizes with us in our grief over loss of loved ones • If someone you know is grieving, pray for them, comfort them • Express genuine condolence, sympathy, and concern

  18. Application • Know that Jesus is concerned about us in our darkest times • Receive His help, share His hope • Trust God to move you beyond life’s situations which seem helpless and hopeless
