  1. Writing Rubric: Can we grade it? Yes we can! Carol A. Osborn Carol Osborn, Meadowbrook Writing Project Summer 2003

  2. A rubric is a tool to give authentic feedback to a learner. • In writing a rubric could be a summative (initial) or formative (final) evaluation. • Rubrics can be used in all content areas. • A rubric clarifies how the student earned His/her grade. A good rubric prevents angry student/parent/teacher conferences Carol Osborn, Meadowbrook Writing Project Summer 2003

  3. For writing, the scale of most good rubrics range from 1-4 to 1-8. With one being the lowest score a student can earn • MEAP using a scale of 1-6. • Using similar scale in class is one way to help students become accustomed to MEAP scoring. Carol Osborn, Meadowbrook Writing Project Summer 2003

  4. 7th Grade MEAP Writing Test • Topic – Fairness and Justice • Checklist for Revising and Proofreading • Rubric for writing Carol Osborn, Meadowbrook Writing Project Summer 2003

  5. Teachers in other curriculums are using rubrics too. In my building, the math and science teachers want to use an uniform writing rubric for all content areas. Benefits: Students evaluated by same criteria. Saves checking time by teacher. Can be used, in conferences, to show student strengths and weakness. Carol Osborn, Meadowbrook Writing Project Summer 2003

  6. Writing Activity Using the rubric from MEAP, create your own rubric evaluating restaurants. You only have 20 minutes, so keep it simple. Carol Osborn, Meadowbrook Writing Project Summer 2003

  7. Evaluating Your Rubric Does it cover a variety of different restaurants? Does it take into account dietary restrictions? Can it be applied to people of different age groups? Carol Osborn, Meadowbrook Writing Project Summer 2003

  8. Summing things up • Rubrics are here to stay. • They provide authentic feedback for students. • In the long run, they save time for teachers. • Resources on web to help in rubric construction. Carol Osborn, Meadowbrook Writing Project Summer 2003
