  5. “My dear brethren, this is an answer to the great challenge of our time. The word of God, as found in the scriptures, in the words of the living prophets, and in personal revelation, has the power to fortify the Saints and arm them with the Spirit so they can resist evil, hold fast to the good, and find joy in this life. ” (President Ezra Taft Benson, The Power of the Word, [Priesthood Leadership Meeting, 4 April 1986], bold and italics added.)

  8. “Man has a dual nature: one, related to the earthly or animal life; the other, akin to the Divine. Whether a man remains satisfied within what we designate the animal world, satisfied with what the animal world will give him, yielding without effort to the whim of his appetites and passions and slipping farther and farther into the realm of indulgence, or whether, through self-mastery, he rises toward intellectual, moral, and spiritual enjoyments depends upon the kind of choice he makes every day, nay, every hour of his life.” (David O. McKay, Gospel Ideals, p.347 348)

  9. “What think ye of Christ?’(Matt. 22:42.) That question, posed by our Lord, has challenged the world for centuries. Fortunately for us, God has provided modern scripture, another testament, even the Book of Mormon, for the convincing of the world that Jesus is the Christ. Anyone who will read the Book of Mormon and put it to the divine test that Moroni proposes (see Moro. 10:3 5) can be convinced that Jesus is the Christ. Once that conviction is gained, then comes the question ‘Will we choose to follow Him?’The devils believe that Jesus is the Christ, but they choose to follow Lucifer” (See James 2:19; Mark 5:7.) (Ezra Taft Benson, Ensign, Nov. 1985, pp. 4-6).

  10. “On the evening of the 21st of September, 1823, previous to retiring to rest, our brother’s mind was unusually wrought up on the subject which had so long agitated his mind--his heart was drawn out in fervent prayer, and his whole soul was so lost to every thing of a temporal nature, that earth, to him had lost its charm, and all he desired was to be prepared in heart to commune with some kind messenger who could communicate to him the desired information of his acceptance with God.” (Letters of Oliver Cowdery, Messenger and Advocate, Vol. 1:77. Letter #4.)
