This doctrine, this doctrine of the priesthood--unknown in the world and but little known even in the Church--cannot be learned out of the scriptures alone. It is not set forth in the sermons and teachings of the prophets and Apostles, except in small measure.
This doctrine, this doctrine of the priesthood--unknown in the world and but little known even in the Church--cannot be learned out of the scriptures alone. It is not set forth in the sermons and teachings of the prophets and Apostles, except in small measure. The doctrine of the priesthood is known only by personal revelation. It comes, line upon line and precept upon precept, by the power of the Holy Ghost to those who love and serve God with all their heart, might, mind, and strength (Bruce R. McConkie, The Doctrine of the Priesthood, CR, April 1982).

D&C 84:23-24 23 Now this Moses plainly taught to the children of Israel in the wilderness, and sought diligentlyto sanctify his people that they might behold the face of God; 24 But they hardened their hearts and could not endure his presence; therefore, the Lord in his wrath, for his anger was kindled against them, swore that they should not enter into his restwhile in the wilderness, which rest is the fulness of his glory.”

We consider that God has created man with a mind capable of instruction, and a faculty which may be enlarged in proportion to the heed and diligence given to the light communicated from heaven to the intellect; and that the nearer man approaches perfection, the clearer are his views, and the greater his enjoyments, till he has overcome the evils of his life and lost every desire for sin; and like the ancients, arrives at that point of faith where he is wrapped in the power and glory of his Maker and is caught up to dwell with Him (Teachings of the Prophet Joseph Smith, 51).

President John Taylor said on one occasion, speaking to the brethren of the Priesthood: “If you do not magnifyyour callings, God will hold you responsible for those you might have saved, had you done your duty.” This is a challenging statement. . . . if I fail in my assignment as a bishop, a stake president, a mission president, or one of the General Authorities of the Church--if any of us fail to teach, lead, direct, and help to save those under our direction and within our jurisdiction, then the Lord will hold us responsible if they are lost as the result of our failure (Hugh B. Brown, Conference Report, Oct. 1962, p. 84).
