Implementation of the Common Core State Standards Dr. Jennifer Corum December 2011
The Common Core State Standards Initiative • Beginning in the spring of 2009, Governors and state commissioners of education from 48 states, 2 territories and the District of Columbia committed to developing a common core of state K-12 English-language arts (ELA) and mathematics standards. • The Common Core State Standards Initiative (CCSSI) is a state-led effort coordinated by the National Governors Association (NGA) and the Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO). • www.corestandards.org
Common Core State Standards Design Building on the strength of current state standards, the CCSS are designed to be: • Focused, coherent, clear and rigorous • Internationally benchmarked • Anchored in college and career readiness* • Evidence and research based
Assessments • Missouri has joined the Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium (one of two funded by US Dept of Ed) • Summative Assessments: • “New MAP” • Mandatory grades 3 – 8, HS English and Math • Computer Adaptive Testing • Interim Assessments: • Optional - Administered Locally • Combines Computer Adaptive and Performance Tasks
Assessment Timeline for Missouri 2010 – 2012: Assessment Development 2013 – 2014: Field Testing in Missouri (tentative) 2014 – 2015: Operational Summative “New MAP” Assessment Administered for all Smarter Balanced states (Federal requirement) Spring 2015: Final Achievement Standards (summative) Verified and Adopted
English Language Arts and Literacy in History/Social Studies, Science, and Technical Subjects Common Core State Standards for
Overview of ELA • College and Career Readiness (CCR) Standards • Overarching standards for each strand that are further defined by grade-specific standards • Grade-Level Standards in English Language Arts • K-8, grade-by-grade • 9-10 and 11-12 grade bands for high school • Four strands: Reading, Writing, Speaking and Listening, and Language • Standards for Literacy in History/Social Studies, Science, and Technical Subjects • Standards are embedded at grades K-5 • Content-specific literacy standards are provided for grades 6-8, 9-10, and 11-12
Overview of ELA: Reading • Reading • Emphasize the importance of grade-level texts that are of appropriate difficulty and are increasingly sophisticated • Standards for Reading Foundational Skills (K-5) • Reading Standards for Literature (K-12) • Reading Standards for Informational Text (K-12) • Reading Standards for Literacy in History/Social Studies (6-12) • Reading Standards for Literacy in Science and Technical Subjects (6-12)
Overview of ELA: Writing • Writing • Expect students to compose arguments and opinions, informative/explanatory pieces, and narrative texts • Focus on the use of reason and evidence to substantiate an argument or claim • Emphasize ability to conduct research – short projects and sustained inquiry • Require students to incorporate technology as they create, refine, and collaborate on writing • Include student writing samples that illustrate the criteria required to meet the standards (See standards’ appendices for writing samples)
Overview of ELA: Speaking & Listening and Vocabulary • Speaking and Listening • Focus on speaking and listening in a range of settings, both formal and informal – academic, small-group, whole-class discussions • Emphasize effective communication practices • Require interpretation and analysis of message as presented through oral, visual, or multimodal formats • Vocabulary • Include conventions for writing and speaking • Highlight the importance of vocabulary acquisition through a mix of conversation, direct instruction, and reading • To be addressed in context of reading, writing, speaking and listening
Mathematics Common Core State Standards for
Common Core State Standards for Mathematics • Grade-Level Standards • K-8 grade-by-grade standards organized by domain • 9-12 high school standards organized by conceptual categories • Standards for Mathematical Practice • Describe mathematical “habits of mind” • Standards for mathematical proficiency: reasoning, problem solving, modeling, decision making, and engagement • Connect with content standards in each grade
Mathematic Domains K-5 • Counting and Cardinality • Operations and Algebraic Thinking • Numbers and Operation in Base Ten • Measurement and Data • Geometry 6-8 • Ratios and Proportional Relationships • The Number System • Expressions and Equations • Geometry • Statistics and Probability • Functions • High School • Number and Quantity • Algebra • Functions • Geometry • Statistics and Probability
Implications for Park Hill • Continued High Expectations & Rigor • Alignment with CSIP • Improve academic achievement for all students • Increase the relevancy of educational programming for students • Focus on the individual needs of students • Continued focus on technology and College & Career Readiness
Spring 2011 and Summer 2011 K-12 ELA and Mathematics Common Core Curriculum Writing Team • Planning • Summer Institute • Initial curriculum documents in BYOC • Next Step conversations • Academic Services planning Administrator Communication Academic Services Planning
School Year 2011-12 Common Core Curriculum Writing Team • Curriculum document finalization • Scoring guide work • Vertical alignment • 1st Step Focus Area planning for 2012-13 • Assessment item exploration Academic Services • Deployment of Focus Areas for 2012-13 • Plan for PD needs and resources • Increase knowledge of assessments • Utilize Instructional Coaches as first step implementers
School Year 2012-13 Park Hill • Implementation of 1st Step Focus Areas • PD on full implementation in 2013-14 Common Core Curriculum Writing Team • Continue discussion of assessment items Academic Services • Deployment of full Common Core for 2013-14 • Train on aligned resources • Pedagogy trainings as necessary • Communication Plan to the public for 2013-14 • Utilize Instructional Coaches as first step implementers
