  2. Introduction to Agricultural and Extension Education • We are going to have a great time and learn about the oportunities for you in Agricultural Education

  3. What is this course about? • CATALOG DESCRIPTION: Introduction to the philosophy, aims, and objectives of agricultural and extension education. Explanation of programs, career opportunities, and qualifications needed in agricultural and extension education.

  4. Purpose of this Course? • To introduce you to the Ag Ed program • To help you gain an understanding of the process of getting through the program • To help develop a general understanding of the scope of Ag Ed. And related career opportunities. • Orientation to the program and Agricultural Education

  5. OBJECTIVES: • Identify the role of Agricultural Education programs in meeting educational needs of youth and adults. • Develop individual/personal plan for successful entrance and advancement in a chosen phase of Agricultural Education. • Explain the philosophy, purposes, and organizational structure of vocational, agricultural, and extension education. • Describe agricultural and extension education programs and the major components of each. • Identify career opportunities for Agricultural Education graduates.

Objectives, continued….. • Explain the personal and professionalqualifications needed for success in AgriculturalEducation. • Review the major responsibilities and activities of professional educators in Agricultural Education. • Describe the need for professional development, professionalism, including professional organizations associated with agricultural education. • Identify the opportunities and rewards for leadership development in Agricultural Education. • Describe the objectives of the Cooperative Extension Service. • Review the role of adult education as a part of Ag Ed

  7. Schedule for semester! • 2:00--3:50 p.m. (not 4:50) • mostly in class, 2 field trips as group • you make a couple of presentations

Graded Activities • Attend an ag ed related activity and type a 1 page summary. 50 • Attend an ag ed professional meeting and type a 1 page summary 50 • Individually visit two schools with an agriculture program and interview the teachers and observe their classes for 3 hours. Develop a brief two page, type written report of the activities you observed for each schools and present in class. 200 • Quizzes/activities (25 points each) 200 • Final 100

  10. Why do all of this? • Contact with the people who are actually teaching • Diversity of programs • Observing teachers and programs • Summarizing observations in writing and orally • Networking with professionals • Gain some level of confidence about your knowledge of ag ed.

  14. I am David Agnew • Former farm boy from hills of West Tennessee • Raised cattle, had two horses, and chickens • Raised corn, soybeans and cotton, some wheat and milo • Had Ag in high school, member of FFA • What to major in at college…???????

  15. Undergraduate work at University of Tennessee at Martin • BS in Agricultural Education • Active in Collegiate FFA, Block and Bridle and several non-agriculture clubs

Ag Teacher • Taught five years in both a one teacher and a two teacher program. • Started teaching when I was 20 years old. • Had students in state winning events, parl pro, soils, skills. Some went on to national contests. • Had students to win state proficiency awards • Had great students and some not so great

My Philosophy of Education • Smart is better than dumb • Education does not always mean smart • All who have education are not smart • Education and Moral are different • Common sense is not education, but may be more important, good to have • There is great pleasure in knowing • All people can learn something

My Philosophy of Education, Continued... • Individual worth is unrelated to education • Opportunities to contribute to society can be enhanced by education • Education gives you a hunting licence. It is an opportunity to look for a variety of kinds of work • All work has dignity • Work is not a dirty word.

  27. My Philosophy of Agricultural Education • I like agriculture and natural resources • I like sharing and helping people • Self sufficient is better than dependent • However, no man is an an island • Rural is better than city • To live rural there must be a means of support
