What is an Analogy? "all knowledge is ultimately rooted in metaphorical (or analogical) modes of perception and thought" *(Leary, 1990, p. 2) -quote from http://repo-nt.tcc.virginia.edu/book/chap2/chapter2sec4.html -image from http://www.cogs.susx.ac.uk/users/christ/crs/gc/lec15-slide8.html
Analogies in Education • The past research: • Courses were taught with and without addition of analogies -> test scores significantly higher with analogy in all studies found • Understanding of text passages with and without analogies compared -> some studies found positive results while other did not • Determining factors believed to be how well the analogies were explained and how much time the readers were allotted • The gap: • What can be done to make text-based analogies more effective? • The research question: • Does changing the location of the analogy within the passage significantly alter its effectiveness?
