  1. The middle ages

  2. Heraldry Heraldry was the use of symbols to express your family name. It used different symbols and colors on a quilt or sheet that a family would hang at their window. A King and Queen would use the color purple, for royalty. A herald takes care of heraldry in a home. Also, heraldry can be something passed down to you.

  3. Chivalry Chivalry is something every knight had to adjust to after being dubbed as a knight. Basically, it was being courteous and polite to all women who passed. If a woman was getting out of a carriage into a puddle, a knight would take off his coat, or cloak, and lay it over the puddle so the woman could stay dry.

  4. The Church The Church was extremely important during medieval life. Some people even vowed their lives to what they believed in! Take monks or nuns for example. Every monk or nun swore to religious lives. The Pope headed the Church. He also would swear to a religious life. The word Pope means father. This makes sense because the Pope is the father of his Church. The Pope was not a King, but he ruled over all religious matters.

  5. Knights and Knighthood Every young man’s dream wasto become a knight. Before you do that, you’d have to become a squire. A squire is a young boy ages 12 and up, training to become a knight. While the older squires trained, the 12 year olds preferred to play pretend with wooden horses and little wooden swords. Sometimes even ponies! As the squire grew older, he started to take things more seriously. He would ride on a real war horse and receive a larger wooden sword. At an even older age the squire could choose. He could either keep going into becoming a knight, he could keep training, or he could just go home. If he chose to become a knight, he would bathe, dress in white robes, and head off to the Church. At the Church, the knight would be blessed, and then receive a tap on each shoulder. This is called a dubbing. After that the squire is an official Knight.

  6. There were many people of the Middle Ages. Priest- Preformed religious services at both Church and celebrations. Jester- Yesterday’s clown. Troubadours- Entertainers. Knights- Horse soldiers. Villeins- Lived and worked on the Manors. Squires- Young noblemen in training. Craftsman- Worked all over. Pope- Head of Catholic Churches. Monks- Men who swore to religious lives. Guildsman- Craftspeople. There are more people of the Middle Ages. These are just examples.
