A Fresh Look at Assessment May 2003
Quality Writing Quality Math CSR Testing SAT-9/CAT-6 CST Classroom Assessments Assessment of Learning Assessment We knew that... Mandated assessments were taking too much instructional time and providing limited information about what our students needed to learn. Mandated Assessments
We wondered if we could… • Test less • Teach more • Use assessment to better guide teaching decisions
In the spirit of collaboration, the Interest Based Problem Solving (IBPS) team directed a study group to explore the issues around assessment. The work of the study group centered around the guiding question… How can assessment policies and practices best serve the instructional needs of students and help improve the teaching and learning processes in our district?
Study Team Recommendations: • Establish a comprehensive, coherent and continuous assessment system based upon research • Provide related professional development • Integrate technology • Provide continuous review • Rebuild the PUSD assessment system
The Good News …. The research showed that: The best assessment is closest to the learner and closest to the teaching moment Therefore… To be most effective, a district assessment system is founded upon the assessments for learning generated from classroom teachers
In order to rebuild the PUSD Assessment System… … all District mandated assessments are suspended for the 2003-2004 school year … teachers will determine what works best in supporting and monitoring student learning
Here’s how… STAR CST Assessment of Learning Assessment for Learning Assessment
What are assessments for Learning? • Informs the learner • Informs the teacher • Invites student participation • Available • Guides instruction • Linked to standards • Embedded in instruction • Selected by teacher • Used when needed • Site determined • Leading Indicators • Portfolios • Progress Reports • Running Records • Literacy Assessment Guide • IRIs • Skill assessments • math basic skills • reading fluency • Spelling Inventories • Analytic Rubrics for Writing • Teacher Observations • MAPS
Building upon Assessment FOR Learning As a teacher, you ask… … How do I determine what ______ knows and is able to do? … How do I decide what to teach _______ next? … How do I know if ______ learned what I taught? These are assessments FOR learning Classroom
Building upon Assessment FOR Learning As a team,…. we determine which assessment tools will be used by our grade level to guide instructional decisions and monitor student progress. and we determine how often we need to use them. Team Classroom
Building upon Assessment FOR Learning As a site, we… Collaborate across grade levels so that, as students move from grade to grade, there are some commonly understood measures of student progress. SITE Team Classroom
How Is This Different? Site assessment plans are built upon teacher and team decisions… • Teachers determine the type and time for assessing their students • Teams agree upon common assessments • Teams decide how to use the results to drive student learning
How Does This Work on Assessment Fit Into the District Vision? • Personal and shared commitment to EVERY STUDENT learning • Efforts focused on student achievement in: • READING • WRITING • MATH
How do we get started? • Determine what’s important for you to know about your students • Design or identify the assessments that give you that information • Assess students as needed to guide instruction • Review and analyze the results to determine instructional implications
Then…… 6. Design support and instructional options based on individual student results 7. Do the work you defined • Communicate the results 9. REPEAT
