Introduction • In 2007 the AEGS Information Resource Centre expanded and became the Self Access Learning and Information Centre. • In addition to information on courses, careers and support services available to adults returning to education, the expanded Centre provides: • Access to IT resources for Adult Education Service learners and staff • Extended opening hours • Dedicated support worker to facilitate self-access or self-directed learning.

Usage to Date • From Nov 2007 to June 2008 there has been over 1,400 visits to the expanded Centre • Both staff and learners from all programmes have used the Centre for a wide variety of purposes including: • Course and Career Information • Research • Practising skills learnt in class • E-learning

  5. Purpose for Using the Centre

  6. What is E-Learning • Electronic learning (or e-Learning or eLearning) is a type of education where the medium of instruction is computer technology. There are 2 types: • No interpersonal interaction takes place for example, the learner works through some software programme. • E-learning also takes place in online distance learning programmes of study where the students communicate with tutors and other students over the Internet.

Adult Education Information Service • The Adult Education Information Service helps adults to find information on education and careers. • For all CLVEC adult learners and staff AND • All adults 16+ not in full time education considering accessing second-chance adult learning opportunities. • This happens on an individual or group basis

  13. Information Officer – Siobhan White Assisting Staff and Learners to: • Find information on what courses/progression options are available • Find Information on applying for funding and other supports • Find information on other relevant educational support services

Enhancing Information Provision and Accessibility In addition, the Information Officer supervises the design and delivery of a number of Adult Education Publicationsand Resources including: • The CLVECAdult Education Directory • This has a 20,000 print run and is distributed free of charge throughout the city • It also forms the back bone of a local searchable database of courses hosted on the City of Limerick VEC web-site. • The Limerick Community Education Network Brochure • A free annual booklet detailing all community based classes

Enhancing Information Provision and Accessibility • Working across programmes supporting the production of timely and relevant educational information material • e.g. supported VTOS Tutors to redesign and reword their course descriptors to ensure they are now more user friendly • Development and ongoing maintenance of the content of the Community Education Kiosks • Supporting the Community and Programme Based Guidance Counsellors by preparing information packs for their centres and clients

Self-Access Information • The Centre provides: • Information on and application forms for all courses • Information on a variety of career options – A Careers library detailing jobs from Accountant to Zoologist • In addition to providing access to: • Guidance Software for careers assessment • Education, careers and guidance reference material

Self-Access Information • The Adult Education Information Service is offered in the following ways: • Phone In: 061-310880 • Log In: www.communitylink.ie/kiosks • Drop-In: Wednesday & Thursday 10.00 – 12.30 (Sept – June) • E-mail: guidanceinfo@clvec.ie • Outside of the “Drop-In” times, and during Centre opening hours, users can independently research educational and career options of interest to them.
