  2. “Making Connections in Elementary and Middle School Social Studies” “Evaluating in social studies should be designed to value students’ thinking and their preparation to become responsible citizens, rather than rewarding memorization of decontextualized facts.” (pg.10 par.1) Big IdeaA traditional approach to social studies is the “widening horizons” approach; although it may have a “limiting” structure “widening horizons” also provides students with a starting point and with time broadens the area and information of study.  Submitted by: Aliza Robinson

  3. Enhancing Social Studies For those students who loath history this video seems like a fresh of breath air.  I would use it as an introduction video for a U.S. history lesson on wars or the colonization of Americans. At a higher level I would use this maybe as an introduction to a review for a test or quiz. Submitted by: Aliza Robinson

  4. Chosen Strategies -Personally Relevant History-Developing Map Skills I see visual and kinesthetic learners doing best in these activities. Both activities call for students getting up out of their chairs and exploring. Students will have to take what they see and either analyze it or translate it. Students with visual disabilities may have quite a bit of trouble with these activities, but the book addresses that as well in the "meeting the needs" sections. Submitted by: Aliza Robinson

  5. No Child Left Behind  I personally believe that the goal of NCLB is excellent, but this act is not effective or reasonable. The tests given to students yearly which record the students’ academic levels are highly formal with no room for interpretation. In places such as Las Vegas, we have many students who are at a disadvantage, one of the main disadvantages being that they are ELL. Submitted by: Aliza Robinson

  6. Field Trip! Hoover Dam/ Hoover Dam Museum Geography/History Take a tour of the Hoover Dam and end the field trip with a stroll through the Hoover Dam Museum. Price is $65 per student. 15. Family Involvement • Family involvement is a key factor to having a healthy relationship between family and teacher. A few ways I will promote family involvement are as follows: • Open Communication • Keeping made promises • Updates about student progress • Updates about class activities/studies • Updates about any upcoming trips/Celebrations • Communicating the needs to the classroom Submitted by: Aliza Robinson

  16. Collaborative Teaching • Teaching is not something that should be attempted alone, there are many resources and alternatives; one of these alternatives being collaborative teaching. A few of the many advantages to collaborative teaching are as follows: • Both instructors are equally valued • Share a mutual goal • Share resources and expertise • Committed to working together to achieve goals • Student Benefit • Student to teacher ratio Submitted by: Aliza Robinson

  17. Social Studies Hisotory Explore the history of America. Civics/Government Explore the structure and reasoning behind the U.S. Government. Economics Learn Why and How currency is the largest influence in the world. Geography Explore the world while making observations and analyzing theories. Submitted by: Aliza Robinson

  18. Me as a Teacher • Strengths • Creative • Determined to achieve my goals • Self-motivated • Very Perceptive • Able to make connections with people quickly • Weaknesses • Lack the confidence in teaching ability • Experience Submitted by: Aliza Robinson

  19. Social Studies in E.S. In Elementary school students are at a very impressionable age. If we show them the impacts and stresses certain behaviors, actions, and attitudes have they will remember them consciously and sub-consciously for a very long time. Students at this age carry the views of their family and friends without any reasoning other than familiarity. If we break that bond, and allow them to create their own opinions from real evidence and facts they will have a much healthier view of their community, country, and of the world. 20. Ah-Ha!!! This may seem lame and possibly silly, but my “Ah-Ha!” moment happened between our 1st and 2nd Unit plans. I realized that once you have a system that works for you, the work load seems merely half the size it did before hand. Being a teacher there is a lot of work to be done, I have heard it can be very overwhelming, and frustrating at times. With a routine that works best for me I will be able to finish paperwork and research in much less time than if I hadn’t had a routine. Lesson Learned: Find what works best for you!
