2. EMS Timelines On February 15, 1113
the order was formally named the Hospitallers of St. John of Jerusalem and recognized in a papal bull issued by Pope Paschal II. They were lead by Brother Gerard (or Gerald)
1120- Knights Hospitaller lead by Raymond Du Puy succeeds Gerard
Carl Ludwig (1816-1895) and his discovery of electrical stimulus-induced ventricular fibrillation.
1909:
The American Red Cross begins its first aid training program.
The Public Health Service begins it's medical self help program using volunteers
Fire Departments Nationally begin to respond to Emergency Medical Calls
1934: Columbus, Ohio begins running a Basic Life Support (BLS) squad through their fire department.
1959: Los Angles Fire Department initiates a BLS response and carries extrication equipment and first aid equipment on the squad.
1969 The Miami FL Fire Department started the nation's first paramedic program under Dr. Eugene Nagel. The very first out of hospital defibrillation occurred shortly thereafter (the patient survived and left the hospital neurologically intact).
3. History of EMS 1973:
The United States Congress enacts the EMS Systems Act providing $170 million to enhance EMS over a three year period. As of 1974 the first states to have EMT certification was California and Florida.
1977:
The term "paramedic" was included in the EMS Act of 1973. The effect was to establish statewide standards for training and testing along with the elimination of the individual county

Schwartz, Chief of the EMS Branch, National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the "Star of Life" was created after the American National Red Cross complained in 1973 that they objected to the common use of an Omaha orange cross on a square background of reflectorized white which clearly imitated the Red Cross symbol. NHTSA investigated and felt the complaint was justified.Designed by Leo R.
