Who Can be a Scholar of Distinction ? The Scholars of Distinction is a program of the Minnesota Department of Education that nurtures and recognizes distinguished achievement by highly motivated students.
Minnesota’s Scholars: • public school, private school, home-schooled, • extend learning to achieve a greater degree of academic specialization and complexity, • demonstrate expert or highly accomplished levels of performance in chosen area, • earn cash awards and recognition on school transcript.
Criteria for Math Award,for example…. • Candidates must present evidence of good work in demanding mathematics courses • Candidates must show participation in extracurricular mathematical activities • Students need recommendations from a mathematics teacher • Students will work with a mentor to write a mathematical paper that requires learning some new mathematics and the art of mathematical exposition
Criteria for Theater Arts Award,for example…. • Areas: acting, directing, playwriting, design/technical theater • Annotated K-12 resumé • Portfolio of work samples • Review writing • Script analysis or compare/contrast work • Artistic statement • Letters of support/ recommendation
