  3. Safavid Empire • Sunni vs. Shii – Caliphate vs. Decadency • Safavid as Shii are persecuted and form large army and shii brotherhood • Model their rule on Ottoman Empire

  4. Ismail and Persia • Conquers Persia (today Iran) with his trained (redheads) took ancient Persian Title of shah • Transforms Persia into a Shii region • Fought Selim the Grim in religious war. Killed Sunni in Baghdad (original Iran Iraq war) • Also Took Caucus Mountains

  5. Shah Abbas • Abbas formed a culture that took the best of Arab, Persian, and Ottoman culture • Limited the power of the “redheads” • Like the Janissaries he formed an army of slaves • He brought in Chinese artisans, and focused on arts • Rebuilds Esfahan
