Honoring Father and Mother It does not mean… • Parents are placed above the Lord (Mt. 10:37; 19:29; Lk. 12:53; 14:26) • Parents are obeyed in unlawful things (Mk. 6:24; only “in the Lord”) • Parents always set the right example (1 Kings 22:51-53)
Honoring Father and Mother How does a child honor his parents? • Not harm them (Ex. 21:15; Prov.19:26) • Not curse them (Ex. 21:17; Lev. 20:9; Deut. 27:16; Prov. 20:20) • “Fear” – reverence/ respect them (Lev. 19:3) • Obey them (Deut. 21:18-21; Eph. 6:1-4)
Honoring Father and Mother How does a child honor his parents? • Not dishonor them (Deut. 27:16; Ezek. 22:17; Micah 7:6; Mt. 10:35) • Listen to them (Prov. 1:8; 6:20; 10:1; 15:20; 23:22,25) • Not rob them (Prov. 28:24) • Not mock them (Prov. 30:11,17) • Take care of them in old age (Mt. 15:4-5; Mk. 7:10-12)
Honoring Father and Mother What is the promise?: (1)that it may be well with thee, and (2) you may live long on the earth • Obedience leads to good order • Obeying authority leads to a good and long life • Learn to make wise decisions • Learn to stay away from dangers and vices that shorten life
