2. CHANGES TO THE BCG PROGRAMME Why?
The principle role of BCG is to protect individuals at high risk of exposure to TB
BCG is most effective in preventing severe disease in infants and young children
Targeted BCG vaccination means that the majority of children at high risk of TB will now be vaccinated in early life.
3. BCG Bradford &Airedale tPCT does not have an incidence of TB of 40/100,000 or greater. Those recommended to receive BCG are risk assessed from birth onwards;
Therefore babies born in BRI &AGH Maternity unit will be risk assessed and offered the BCG vaccination if necessary.
4. Ongoing gateways for BCG risk assessment New consents
Parents of new babies who have reconsidered consent, will be referred through the HV service
Movements into the tPCT
New patients who are immigrants will be risk assessed by General Practice and referred to the Community TB service if necessary
All new clients/patients should be risk assessed when entering the caseload of, for example, Practice Nurses, Health visitors and the School Nursing Service and referred as necessary

Has your child ever had the BCG vaccination in the past
Were any of your childs parents or grandparent born abroad, if so where
Have any of the family members on the list in Question 2 had TB within the last 5 yrs?
6. Referral Details If requiring Mantoux or BCG patients/clients should be referred to;
In Bradford-CommunityTB nurse at the Manningham clinic if under 6 years old.
In Airedale-Specialist TB nurse at Airedale General Hospital if under 6 years old.
The school nursing service if at school and under 18 years old and attending school.
Those under 18 years old and no longer at school can be referred to TB nurse at Airedale General Hospital.

Clinics
Mantoux and BCG clinics will be co-ordinated at a local and district level.
8. MANTOUX TEST The Mantoux test has replaced the Heaf test as a method of TB skin testing.
The Mantoux test is an unlicensed Tuberculin PPD which has been licensed and widely used in Europe since 2000
The Mantoux test is administered under a Patient Specific Direction, which is signed by a doctor or extended nurse prescriber.
9. Finally Occupational and travel related recommendations remain unchanged.
