Overview of RSSL • We have been in operation since 1987 • We have two sites based on Reading University campus • We employ ~300 staff within our different laboratories • Mondelēz International are our parent company, we work for them and for other companies as well
How do RSSL use Science? • Our analysts use laboratory skills to check the quality of food, pharmaceuticals and healthcare products… • They use Science to solve our customers problems and help them develop new products…
What techniques do we use? • Light Microscopy • Wet Chemistry • X-ray microanalysis • Gas and Liquid Chromatography • Infra-Red and UV visible spectroscopy • Particle Size Distribution • Endotoxins • ELISA and Polymerase Chain Reaction
Wet Chemistry • Quality control of Pharmaceutical raw materials and API’s (Active Pharmaceutical ingredients) • pH • Limit tests (Arsenic, Lead, Iron, Sulphate, chlorides, aldehydes) • Assay • Identification tests • Moisture analysis • Glass vials and rubber closure testing
Instrumental Analysis Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) Spectroscopy • Looks at behaviour of atoms in a magnetic field to provide structural information • Used to look at mixtures or extracted compounds • Capsule found in bottle of water
