Chapter 70 History Production The challenges The proposal
Chapter 70 History Production Staples’ price to reproduce the 1974-1999 Chapter 70 History book, or a book of similar size and makeup (18 black & white pages, 45 colour pages, 2 card stock covers, clear plastic front and Cerlox binding): $25.36 ea, or $20.62 ea in qty 10, or $19.75 ea in qty 25. Above assumes customer provides the Portable Document Format (.pdf) file and Staples only charges for colour when printing a colour page even though running through a colour copier.
Chapter 70 History Production • Enormous effort would be required to lay out the pages and encaption the 225 colour photos taken since the February 2000 dinner meeting. • Reproducing and binding such a book would result in a book too expensive to sell enough. • To minimize pricing we would be tempted to overbuy and be stuck with unsold stock. • Chapter 70 cannot afford this approach in 2009. It requires too much time, effort and financial risk.

Chapter 70 History Production Advantages • Those two new web site pages will be updated shortly after every meeting so the members have a continuous and searchable perpetual history they can enjoy as they can now enjoy the web site. • They can print out anything they want to save or to share.
Chapter 70 History Production • Photos are displayed in good resolution and are presented full screen size in most cases, so the quality is far better than they would be if reduced to fit multiple photos per page as would be normal book practice (to keep cost down). • Captions are searchable so it is easy to find photos by subject name or call sign. • Colour photos can be printed on photographic paper if you want maximum quality.
Chapter 70 History Production • Production is simple and requires no laborious page layout, or having to reduce photo image sizes to make room for the caption line(s). • Provision of the History on the web site eliminates compatibility issues. PC, Mac, Linux etc. all must work OK with web sites. • As the web site already contains a Silent Keys listing, an All-time Executive and an All-time Members listing, there is no need to duplicate.
Chapter 70 History Production • All, even DX members, former members, prospective members and shut-ins can access our web site and history as a members’ benefit. • Our photographers, who have had little or no recognition, will see their work displayed almost immediately instead of having to wait 5-10 years and maybe even then “not making the cut” due to printing cost factors.
Chapter 70 History Production • The web site layout is almost unaffected. • Only one new “pusbutton” labelled “History” is required on the home page. • Several other history-related pages are re-arranged • The impact on the web site is almost seamless.
Chapter 70 History Production • Cost to members per copy ……. $0 • Production cost to Chapter 70 …… $0 • Reproduction/binding cost to Chapter 70 …… $0 • Risk of printing more than can be sold $0 • Future cost to “print me just one more” …… $0 • The precedent for photos on the web site was set by former web master Keith Bedal VE3GFI who added a few linked photos to some of the minutes over a period of years, mostly unnoticed.
Chapter 70 History Production Questions? We provide those as well as answers.
Chapter 70 History Production Questions and Answers • Q. “I like a book I can browse through. The proposed approach does not allow me to write a CD for the post-2000 History that can be printed from and bound as a book I can carry. What about me?” • A. The single advantage of the book medium (portability) must be weighed against the many advantages of the web medium (universal accessibility, photo quality, searchability, low or no cost, easy update, fast error correction and more).
Chapter 70 History Production • Q. “I have a computer but no internet” • A. On request, we can write the entire qcwa70.org web site to a CD which you can display (and print - text or photos) as if you were logged in on the internet. So you can browse printed material if you just print it yourself. • Q. “I have no computer.” • A. All our members have computer access via family or ham friends.
Chapter 70 History Production • Q. “I am sight-impaired. What about me?” • A. You can scroll through the text using text-enlargement software if that works for you. You can also use speech synthesizer software that reads the text to you. For the photos, if you have partial vision, you can enlarge the photo on screen. That is more difficult with a printed book.
Chapter 70 History Production • Q. “The 1974-1999 History book took almost three years to complete after 1999 was completed. When can this proposal be implemented?” • A. As soon as it can be explained to the members at the September 2009 dinner meeting. • The summaries and photos are up to date and ready to upload and integrate into the web site in a few hours time.
Chapter 70 History Production • Some meeting photos have gone astray but can be added when they are located. • That immediate update feature is a huge benefit as there will be no deadline cutoffs from now on. • Some photo subjects can’t be identified so far. If you see one you can identify please let us know. • If we decide to include out-of-town QCWA conventions or non-QCWA events, those can be added, subject to the web site still fitting on a CD.
