Widows Production History! By Henry Zhou and Maggie Phelan
Production History • -In the novel, the play was set in Greece in the year 1942. Interesting, because that's the year the Axis powers were occupying Greece. Clearly, Dorfman's novel was originally about the oppressed Greek citizens at the hands of the Axis during WWII. • -The 14 families, as referenced in the Captain's dialogue, suggests El Salvador. A disproportionately large amount of wealth is accumulated in El Salvador's "14 Families," the elites of the country. • -The original novel, Widows, was written in Spanish under the pretense of Greece inhabited by the Axis so that he could get the play past Pinochet's censor. However, the publisher got cold feet and withdrew. Then, Dorfman wrote Widows again in English and under his own name, published in 1983.
Production History 2 • Commissioned by the Mark Taper Forum here in LA! • First version of the play produced in Fort Worth, Texas, and Williamstown Theatre Festival. • Second version (the Tony Kushner re-write) finally opened at the Mark Taper Forum six years after it was commissioned. • Dorfman re-wrote play again without Kushner to include character of the narrator. • Cut narrator in final version, which had its first New York Production in 2008 at 59E59.
