Chapter 13: Disorders of Childhood • Neurodevelopmental Disorders • New diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorders • Changes to categorization of learning disorders • Number of required criteria for diagnosis of ADHD in adults changed • Further modifications to diagnosis of Intellectual Disability
Autism Spectrum Disorders • 4 diagnoses, not 3, combined in this new diagnosis • Asperger’s Syndrome, Childhood Disintegrative Disorder, Pervasive Developmental Disorder NOS, and Autistic Disorder no longer distinct diagnoses • Specifiers include with or without accompanying intellectual impairment, language impairment, or catatonia
Specific Learning Disorders • Dyscalculia and Dyslexia no longer distinct diagnoses • Specifiers include impairments in reading, written expression and mathematics • Duration criterion of 6 months required for diagnosis
ADHD • Diagnosis in those over 17 requires 5 signs of inattention or 5 signs of hyperactivity/impulsivity, rather than 4.
Intellectual Disability • DSM-5 informed by American Association on Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (AAIDD) guidelines. • Diagnostic criteria clarified • Emphasis on strengths and adaptations • Severity is assessed in three domains: • conceptual • social • practical
Intellectual Disability • Diagnostic Criteria • Intellectual deficits (e.g., in solving problems, reasoning, abstract thinking) determined by intelligence testing and broader clinical assessment • Replaces statistical deviation from average • Onset during development • Rather than prior to age 18
