Enhancing the Employability of Physiotherapy graduates in Sheffield
Background • Approx 2000 new Physio graduates each year • Historically more jobs than Physios • Commission places by DoH • It costs £35000 to train a Physio • Typically accept job in NHS and do "junior rotations" for 2 years then move on
What's changed? • The NHS • Workforce planning • Care delivered in a different way • HEAs are responding but not quickly enough for graduates 2004-7
A survey undertaken by the CSP in September 2007 revealed that 75% of 2007 graduates had yet to find any employment as a physiotherapist.
These graduates... • are unable to secure first jobs • are de-skilling • have limited opportunity to maintain their CPD • Are forced to consider other career options
The Plan • To provide a series of teaching sessions to give graduates the opportunity to maintain their CPD and thus meet "essential criteria" when applying for jobs.
Aims of Programme • To give graduates the opportunity to maintain their CPD and thus meet "essential criteria" when applying for jobs. • To maintain their interest in Physiotherapy • To develop a local network of graduates • Collaborative event • Must be FREE to attend
Is anyone else doing this? • Yes...sort of
Pulling it together • Limited resources • STH volunteered a room • SHU small amount of funding TQEF • SHU AV equipment • Webducate volunteered to do a website • www.cpdspot.com/sheffield • CSP advertised for free
Advertising the programme • Difficult as graduates disperse world wide • Facebook • iCSP • Word of Mouth • CSP magazine "Frontline"
Planning the programme • 5 sessions • FREE • Expert lecturers (clinicians) • Mix of theory and practical • Relevant to this group (user groups) • Focus on interview skills • Patient involvement
Sheffield Physiotherapy NGP 2008 • Respiratory On-call recap • Assessment of the neurological patient • Patient demonstration • Spinal handling session • Interview skills
Documentation • Provided certificates for all graduates to be used as evidence of CPD in their PDPs.
Reflections • The positives • Extremely motivated learners • collaborative, improved links • Increased learners confidence confidence • someone cares • website
Reflections • To work on... • attendance, small population • other ways of delivering the information, could it more web-based? • www.cpdspot.com/sheffield
Evaluation "Not only have these sessions been valuable for keeping our skills up to date, but it was also nice to know that people out there care about our situation and want to do something to help us…. So thank you!" "Really useful having a ward-based session, particularly when it has been a while since some of us have assessed patients in this setting!" "Thank you so much for putting these sessions on, it has restored my confidence in hopefully securing a job. Gave me some confidence in knowing what I might be faced with and realizing we do have the skills to deal with the situations"
Where from here? • Hopefully a limited problem, the employment problem is slowly resolving • Develop the elearning side. More info on website, discussion forum, e-tivities. • Develop a national resource • Integrate into UG L6
