    1. March 2/3, 2011 Warm-up: Write down lyrics, your two favorite lines, from a song you really like. (Keep it school-appropriate by using **** for language.) Can you think of a book, poem, speech, or any other medium that has the same message?

    2. Pairing Poems and Songs (Thematically-Linked) Objective: Your ultimate goal is to match the theme of the poem with a song that has a similar theme. First, use the orange literature book to find a poem that you like (or at least partially understand). You can choose the poem first and find a song to match, or you can choose the song first and find a poem to match. It’s easier to find the poem fist though. On a colored piece of paper, write the theme at the top. Then write the poem and song lyrics side-by-side on colored paper. Underline specific lines that really represent your theme. The students can be very artistic with this and draw pictures and symbols around the two pieces that represent things found in them. The students can be very artistic with this and draw pictures and symbols around the two pieces that represent things found in them.

    3. What’s the connecting theme? “I Dream a World” by Langston Hughes I dream a world where man No other man will scorn, Where love will bless the earth And peace its paths adorn. I dream a world where all Will know sweet freedom's way, Where greed no longer saps the soul Nor avarice blights our day. A world I dream where black or white, Whatever race you be, Will share the bounties of the earth And every man is free, Where wretchedness will hang its head And joy, like a pearl, Attends the needs of all mankind— Of such I dream, my world!
