Because nouns name many things, they have different jobs within sentences.
Example: Brian is getting ready for a baseball game. His team is in first place. A subject tells whom or what a sentence is about. To find the subject, ask yourself: Who or what does something (or is something) in the sentence?

To find the direct object:Say the subject and verb followed by whom or what.The girl kicked whom or what? The girl kicked the soccer ball. Direct object verb subject
If nothing answers the question whom or what, you know that there is no direct object.Example:The cat jumped.The cat jumped who or what? Nothing answers that question so the sentence has no direct object.

Indirect objects tell:to whom or what the action is doneORfor whom or what an action is done
In other words:When someone or something gets the direct object, that word is the indirect object.
