Nouns and Their Jobs. Today’s Objective: We will identify nouns in a sentence as: subjects complements direct objects indirect objects. Because nouns name many things, they have different jobs within sentences. Nouns as Subjects . Example: Brian is getting ready for a baseball game.

  3. Because nouns name many things, they have different jobs within sentences.

  4. Nouns as Subjects

  5. Example: Brian is getting ready for a baseball game. His team is in first place. A subject tells whom or what a sentence is about. To find the subject, ask yourself: Who or what does something (or is something) in the sentence?

  6. My cousin lives in New Jersey. He works as an actor in New York City. Sometimes he gets a small part in a TV show. Try a few with a partner. Identify the subject in each sentence. To find the subject, ask yourself: Who or what does something (or is something) in the sentence?

  7. Write at least three sentences with a noun as a subject. Be prepared to use the sentences as examples to teach the class. Create your own examples. To find the subject, ask yourself: Who or what does something (or is something) in the sentence?

  8. Complements

  9. A nouncan be a complement when it completes the meaning of the verb.There are three types of complements:predicate noundirect objectindirect object

  10. Predicate Nouns

  11. Remember!Every complete sentence has two basic parts: a subjectand a predicate My cousin is an actor. Complete subject Complete predicate The complete predicate includes the verb (action word) and all the words that complete the verb’s meaning.

  12. When the complete predicate uses a form of the verb “to be”the noun after the verb is called the predicate noun. The predicate noun renames the subject of the sentence. Predicate noun My cousin is an actor. Complete predicate

  13. Present Tense: I am He/she/it is They/we/you are Forms of the verb “to be” Past Tense: • Iwas • He/she/it was • They/we/you were

  14. Tabitha is my cat. Xena is my other cat. Tabitha is an old lady. Try a few with a partner. Identify the predicate noun in each sentence. Remember, it has to be a noun! (not an adjective or verb)

  15. Write at least three sentences with a predicate noun. Remember, the predicate noun follows a form of the verb “to be.” Be prepared to use the sentences as examples to teach the class. Create your own examples.

  16. Direct Objects

  17. The verb must be an action verb! Example: The direct object receives the action performed by the subject. The girl kicked the soccer ball. Direct object verb subject

  18. Another way of saying it:The subject does the verb to the direct object The girl kicked the soccer ball. Direct object verb subject

  19. To find the direct object:Say the subject and verb followed by whom or what.The girl kicked whom or what? The girl kicked the soccer ball. Direct object verb subject

  20. If nothing answers the question whom or what, you know that there is no direct object.Example:The cat jumped.The cat jumped who or what? Nothing answers that question so the sentence has no direct object.

  21. The soccer player changed her shoes. The carpenter fixed the door. My neighbor mowed her lawn. Try a few with a partner. Identify the direct object in each sentence. Remember, the subject does the verb to the direct object

  22. Write at least three sentences with a direct object. Be prepared to use the sentences as examples to teach the class. Create your own examples.

  23. Indirect Objects

  24. Indirect objects tell:to whom or what the action is doneORfor whom or what an action is done

  25. In other words:When someone or something gets the direct object, that word is the indirect object.

  26. Example: Jim built his granddaughter a sandcastle. subject Direct object verb Indirect object Jim built what? Sandcastle = direct object Who got the sandcastle? Granddaughter = indirect object

  27. Eric sent his brother a postcard. Try a few with a partner. Identify the indirect object in the sentence. Eric sent what? That will be the direct object Who got the direct object? That will be the indirect object

  28. Mrs. Mion will give the students their papers. Identify the indirect object the each sentence. Mrs. Mion will give what? That will be the direct object Who gets the direct object? That will be the indirect object

  29. Did the students give their teacher the assignment? Identify the indirect object in the sentence. The students will give what? That will be the direct object Who gets the direct object? That will be the indirect object

  30. My uncle ran in a marathon. Sometimes an object will appear in a preposition. It can also be called the object of the preposition.
