MY OLDEST HOBBY By: David zhang
Past • It all started when I started watching National Geographic documentaries on wildlife. I was immediately captured by how cool ecosystems and wildlife was. • I got my first turtles in grade 6. I had no idea how to actually take care of them. So naturally I just followed whatever instructions the storekeeper gave me.
Bad idea Needless to say that was a bad idea. It turns out the most pet stores are in it for the profit and not because of any interest or care for the animal. It's a sad thing to misinform an excited 10 year old boy into buying an animal for a $30 profit.
The Present • I've learned since then that these creatures need a massive amount of space and have upgraded accordingly. Here's a video of where I am now with the same turtles. (I swear these things are invincible) • Video: • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bB0iL7knqtY • I've since upgraded to a much larger tank to accommodate them. Even then it's a very labour intensive task with all the water that needs to be changed.
The Future • No one can ever tell what the future may hold but that should never stop us from planning ahead. Here's the plan for my hobby in the future. • Automate all processes. • This means to somehow figure out a way to automate the cleaning, feeding, and maintenance of the set up. Less time tinkering with the issues means more time to enjoy the set up.
