Responding to Mental Health Challenges Ms. Stacey Rontiris (Tomorrow Trust) Dr. Del Naidoo (University of Johannesburg) Mr. Ahmed Riaz Mohamed (University of Pretoria)
Step-by-step guide to creating a mental health intervention • Step 1: Needs Analysis • What is the particular need you want to address? • What is the specific challenge? • How long has it been going on for? • Who has the need? • E.g. Particular field of study, specific institution, gender, year of study etc. • How do you currently manage the challenge? • What works vs. what doesn’t work • What are the current gaps you are experiencing in addressing this challenge? • If not – why not?
Step 2: Resource Analysis • Collect information from those in need and any other relevant stakeholders • How do they think this challenge needs to be managed? • What resources currently exist that could be used? • E.g. institutional resources, mental health support services, online resources etc. • How do you use the resources that are available? • What other resources do you need? • E.g. Facilitator, additional materials, staff training • Can they be sourced easily?
What do you want the outcome to be?
Step 3: Planning the intervention • What does the format of the intervention need to be? • Group vs. Individual • Workshops vs. online vs. written etc. • How frequently will the intervention take place? • Is it once-off or a repeat intervention? • Will there be multiple sessions over a period of time? • Where will the intervention take place? • E.g. Particular field of study, specific institution, gender, year of study etc. • What other logistics need to be considered as part of the planning?
Step 5: Evaluation • How will you know you’ve achieved what you set out to do? • Evaluation Methods • Self-report forms • Focus groups • Quantifiable Measurables E.g. academic results • And if you didn’t? • Try again
