Mowing • Proper mowing is required for good putting greens. • This includes • Changing patterns • Correct height • Precise adjustment of mowers • Daily cleaning & sharpening
Height • Only variable in proper mowing practices • Depends on • Grass species • Amount of traffic • Environmental conditions • Desired speed
Height (cont.) • If a fast green is desired, height can be lowered • Only for a short time • If one needs speed for a long period of time, other methods should be used • Brushing, vericutting & rolling • Daily mowing at recommended heights produces dense, fine textured putting greens without shocking the turf • Less frequent mowing results in the removal of an excessive amount of leaf tissue at each mowing and puts the grass under stress.
Patterns • Changing patterns • Rids graininess • Reduces wheel and mower wear • Established a target by setting green apart from apron or collar • Perimeter mowing is sometimes done with a walking mower
Mower Adjustment • Precise mower adjustment produces • Clean cuts • Uniform cuts • Clean and adjust mower after each use • This assures less equipment failure
Irrigation • Has a great effect on playing • Almost as much as mowing • Wet greens • provide poor playing conditions • Leads to infestations of weeds and algae • Ball marks and footprinting
Irrigation (cont.) • Greens with poor drainage must be watered • slowly • At frequent intervals • To wet the soil 4-6 inches deep • Automatic systems should be cycled so water is applied intermittently • Be careful not to water apron and collar before wetting green
Environmental Conditions • Have more effect on watering than other factors • Temperature • Wind • Humidity • Sunlight • In drier climates watering may be needed more frequently • In most southern climates daily water use rates are about three-quarters of the daily evaporation rate reported by the weather bureau.
Overseeding • Complex operation that requires • Preparation • Timing • Luck • The objective of a skilled turfgrass manager is to minimize the chance for failure by proper • seedbed preparation • planting adapted grass varieties at the proper time, and • careful management during the seedling stage.
Other practices • Dethatching and aeration also influence watering schedules • Thatch restricts water penetration and leads to shallow rooted turf • Light and frequent water are required on thatchy greens • Vertical mowing, aeration and topdressing aides thatch removal and decomposition • Spiking and Coring also helps improve moisture conditons
Summary • Proper mowing is key • Grass height is always a factor when mowing and maintaining turf • Remember weather conditions to monitor • Irrigation • Overseeding • Dethatching • Aeration
