IMPACT • Improvement in moisture regime • Controlled topsoil erosion • Increase in arable land • Increase in cropping intensity • Improved soil structure due to application of silt • Trees on the bund increase biomass production • Fields downstream growing crops due to percolation.
BENEFITS-WATER HARVESTING • Reduces sediment export from uplands • Increase in crop production in areas where normally not feasible • Reduction in desertification-improved reforestation • Improvement in pastures • Reduces soil erosion • Flushes salt buildup from soils- increases land productivity • Earthen bunds on small streams allow stored water in the lakes to percolate and recharge the groundwater body.
