Columbus and the Taino • Christopher Columbus suggested sailing west across the Atlantic Ocean to reach the Indies. • King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella of Spain financed his expedition. • 3 ships: Nina, Pinta, Santa Maria • Reached the Bahama Islands and met the Taino • Columbus thought he reached the Indies and called the Taino “Indians.”
The Columbian Exchange • Spain’s goals for going to the Americas were to find riches and start a colony. • Columbian Exchange -Europeans brought horses, cattle, sheep, and pigs -Americas had corn, potatoes, tomatoes, cocoa, and beans -disease was a negative effect • Native people were forced to work on farms and become Christian.
The Impact of Columbus • America is named for Amerigo Vespucci, the first to call the Americas a “new world.”
