What is the Reproductive System? • Organ system that functions to produce offspring. • Gametes= sex cells
Female Reproductive Organs • Ovaries- Also known as a gonad. Primary reproductive organ in which eggs are produced. • Fallopian Tubes- Also known as uterine tube. The tube through which the ovum is transported to the uterus. • Uterus- Hollow pelvic organ of the female reproductive system that functions to receive, retain, and nourish a fertilized egg. • Vagina- A thin walled tube 8-10 cm. long. That provides a passage way for the delivery of an infant and for menstrual flow to leave the body.
Male Reproductive Organs • Testes- Also know as gonad. Primary reproductive organ of a male. An exocrine function (sperm producing) and endocrine function(testosterone). • Penis- Delivers sperm into the female reproductive tract. • Urethra- Carries the sperm through the penis. • Seminal Vesicles- Located at the base of the bladder, produce 60% of seminal fluid (fluid volume of semen). • Semen- Milky white, somewhat sticky substance. Only 2-5 ml. released during ejaculation, but 50-150 million sperm in there.
