Derrick to complete his PH.D with his dissertation titled “The Divalent Oxygen Atom.” • Brady was the first African Americans to receive a PHD • He published three abstracts of science in in 1914-1915 • He collaborate with Professor George Beal on a paper published in Journal of Industrial and Engineering Chemistry titled, "The Hydrochloride Method for the Determination of Alkaloids." • He study the effect of divalent oxygen • Brady was head of the chemistry department such as Howard and Fisk just to name a few. • Elmo Brady passed away Christmas Day 1966 at the age of 82.
Job information • Chemist is a scientist trained in the science of chemistry. • Chemist study the composition of matter and its properties such as density. • Chemists carefully measure substance proportions, reaction rates, and other chemical properties. • Chemists carefully describe the properties they study in terms of quantities, with detail on the level of molecules and their component atoms. • Chemists use this knowledge to learn the composition, and properties of unfamiliar substances • biochemistry, nuclear chemistry, organic chemistry, inorganic chemistry, analytical chemistry, theoretical chemistry, quantum chemistry, environmental chemistry and physical chemistry
Education is the KEY • The education requirements to be a chemist are as follow • Take chemistry and advance Placement classes in school. • Obtain a bachelor’s degree in chemistry in a program approved by the • American Chemical Society. • Interview with firms that hire chemists with bachelor degree. • Grad school is a must if you want a position with more responsibilities and • higher salary. • Pick your specialty in grad school an work towards your masters. • Decide the fill you prefer • Pharmaceutical and biotechnology are remains plentiful in the near future. • If you plan to teach or conduct you should work towards your PHD
History of…… • Divalent oxygen : basically water • found in most of the chemistry sets & some of the biochemistry • having a valence of two • bonded to two other atoms
Significance The significance to Saint Elmo Brady existence is that he was the first African American to earn a PhD. He had considerable influence on the development of chemistry at Fisk University and training African Americans students at four different (HBCU). He was head of the chemistry department in several schools. He was the first African American to be admitted to Phi Lambda Upsilon ( chemistry honor society).
