Math CAMPPP 2012 Treasures Await! K-4 Breakout One 1
Welcome! Develop an interest in life as you see it; the people, things, literature, music - the world is so rich, simply throbbing with rich treasures, beautiful souls and interesting people. Forget yourself. Henry Miller 2
Group Norms • Treasure each other: we are all part of learning collective. • Share your treasure: when speaking, address the whole group. • Treasure growth: Interactions are intended to move the collective forward.
Group Norms • Knowledge is a treasure: If you are in need of an answer, ask now. • Treasure time: Engage fully in the moment.
Minds On • Four Corners: I think Math CAMPPP will be like: • a trip to an amusement park • a workout class • a treasure hunt • a beach excursion
Introductions • On a sticky note, jot down a fraction that you could use to introduce yourself to your table. • Example: “I make up 1/5 of my family.” “I am 5/8 through my teaching career.”
Action • Use a variety of manipulatives to model the fraction that you used to introduce yourself in as many ways as you can. Model your fraction in at least one way that you wouldn’t normally use. • Record each model on a different sticky note.
It’s Time to Move It, Move It… • Circulate around the room with your sticky note representations. • Post your sticky notes on chart paper under each of the different models of fractions.
Collaboration! • In your group, you will be given one of the sheets with a fraction model. • Organize your chart paper, clustering like ideas, annotating, and shifting sticky notes to the “Under Construction” page if necessary – noting where they came from.
Consolidation Gallery Walk
Consolidation • What criteria did you use when grouping the sticky notes on your page? • Which ones were difficult to place? • Which ones did you choose to move to another page and why?
Math for Teaching: Fraction Meaning • We will be discussing this handout later in the plenary session. • Jot down any gems of knowledge or wonder that you don’t want to forget.
Our Adventure Awaits! There is great treasure there behind our skull and this is true about all of us. This little treasure has great, great powers, and I would say we only have learnt a very, very small part of what it can do. Isaac Bashevis Singer
