  2. Questions Have you ever seen any disasters in real life or on TV? What are they?

  3. On July 28th, 1976, at 3:42 a.m. local time, a powerful earthquake recording M8.2 took place in northeastern China about 95 miles east of Beijing near Tang Shan, an industrial city of about 1 million people. earthquake

  4. Many eye witnesses said they saw a bright flashed across the sky which was followed by a deafening roar just before the shaking began.

  5. fire the blaze in the Hannuohe forestry center in the Greater Hinggan Mountains, northeast China's Heilongjiang Province on May 4, 2007. The fire ravaged 10,400 ha of land, including 10,317 ha grassland and 83 ha forest,

  6. flood Persistent torrential rains in the summer of 1998 caused enormous flooding in the Yangtze River Basin and Northeast China.

  7. The floods have affected one-fifth of China's population in 29 provinces, over 3,600 people have died, and about 5 millions hectares of crops were destroyed. There has been severe damage to infrastructure and social service facilities, disrupting economic production and activities. Economic losses are estimated at over US$ 36 billion.

  8. Typhoon The 2006 typhoon season is one of the most serious in recent years. Between May and July, five consecutive typhoons and tropical storms have swept through China leaving a trail of devastation.

  9. War The total estimated human loss of life caused by World War II, irrespective of political alignment, was roughly 62 million people. The civilian toll was around 37 million, the military toll about 25 million. The Allies lost around 51 million people, and the Axis lost 11 million.

  10. Famine October 16 is World Food Day, an occasion to remember the plight of the world's 850 million chronically hungry people.

  11. After decades of decline, that number has actually been growing by four million each year since the mid-1990s. Today, hunger still kills more people than AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria combined
