Bellwork—Identify the grammar error 10/18/2012 • Identify each of the following sentences as correct, sentence fragment, run-on, or comma splice. • Going to the movies. • I need chocolate, I’m going to the store. • At our house, every Friday is pizza and movie night. • My daughter’s 5th birthday is in May I’m baking a chocolate cake because she loves chocolate.

  3. Give your sentences POWER! • Use sentence variety—simple, complex, compound, complex-compound—throughout your writing. • Avoid subject-verb, subject-verb, subject verb constructions. • I went to the store. Then I went home. I ate dinner. • Fix—After going to the store, I went home and ate dinner.

  4. Give your sentences POWER! • Eliminate non-descriptive words— • So, then, thing, also, this, these, now, that, really, very, stuff • Often these words can be deleted without affecting the sentence. • Combine sentences to eliminate this problem. • Do NOT start sentences with So or Now. • Eliminate redundant phrases • I think that… • You are writing this, so I already know this is what you think.

  5. Strong Verbs • Eliminate is, was, would, have, had, would like • Use powerful verbs. • Example: Instead of “I hid” use “I cowered” • Example: We had several major setbacks. We suffered…

  6. Apply • Read the following sentences. Combine them into one or two sentences. Eliminate wordy phrases and incorporate strong verbs. • The most sudden thing. I saw it out of the corner of my eye and it sent shivers up my spine. In the snow next to the deer track I was following lay cougar tracks. • Potential Rewrite: • Suddenly, out of the corner of my eye, I spied cougar tracks in the snow. Shivers ran up my spine.
