SITUATIONAL SCHOOL CRIME PREVENTION • Situational prevention has been seen as the identification, manipulation and control of situational factors associated with offending (Cornish, Clarke, 2003) • Adoption of situational prevention technique at school context in five general categories: increase the effort; increase the risks; reduce the rewards; reduce provocations; and remove excuses.
SCHOOL POLICE OFFICER IN SERBIA • 2002. – introduction of the school police officer in Serbia; 2011. – 311 school police officers in 558 schools • Increasing the risks (extend guardianship, formal surveillance); remove exuses (set rules, drug and alcohol control) • TASKS: prevention of violence and crime, protection of the school property, student traffic safety, preventing the sale of products harmful to students' health
PURPOSE AND METHODOLOGY • PURPOSE: To analize and evaluate the role of the school police officers in crime prevention in schools in Serbia. • SAMPLE: 27 elementary and secondary schools located in the city of Novi Sad in Serbia • METHOD: analyzing the documentation of the NS police department from January 2009 to December 2010 • DATA PROCESSING: descriptive statistics
RESULTS • 20 school police officers engaged in 16 elementary and 11 secondary schools in Novi Sad • 258 incidents detected: 56% crimes (property crime, violent crimes, drug related crime); 24% misdemeanors (insult, abusive and violent behavior); 20% of other incidents (fire, explosions, false bomb alarm).
RESULTS EVALUATION OF THE SCHOOL POLICE OFFICER • incidents detection rate higher for 11% • crime detection rate higher for 7% • school crime solving rate higher for 14% • involving in others school crime prevention programs
RECOMMENDATION • Fulltime police officers to specific schools • Multidisciplinary partnership with parents, local community, school administrators and staff • Positive reporting climate • Introduction of CCTV and other physical and technical remedies
