The Opportunity • The Space to work in • Some great ideas, processes and capabilities to build on • HEIs- 13 in the West Midlands with a diverse range of strengths • Young, flexible workforce with some useful skills • ‘Can do’ attitude in business • Big established players with their supply chains • Confident thrusting new businesses • Innovation Infrastructure- Science Parks, spin-outs, incubators • RDA’s/ government moving back from ‘picking winners’ to providing the environment for success…

Objectives • Wealth – generate more Gross Value Added through industrial and commercial exploitation of Science & Technology in products and services • Opportunity – Raise awareness amongst business & investor communities and general public of our innovation excellence • Worth- Increase economic and societal impact

Getting things done Potential for wide innovation ‘alliance’ with a small shared ‘entity’, perhaps with the following principal functions: • Broker/ interface between the national innovation agenda (BIS/ TSB) and the local economic growth agenda (LEPs) • Forum for range of partners to develop and oversee a shared framework to catalyse innovation for growth • Resource and service sharing for effectiveness and efficiency, eg co-locations or shared promotion strengths • Initiation and catalysis of new activity eg collaborative demonstrator projects or shared infrastructure, to be subsequently delivered or run by partners

  10. The Virtual Community: Innovation Futures West Midlands The network has been created on LinkedIn to facilitate and drive forward a collective approach to innovation. It will enable useful discussion and information exchange (news feeds from TSB and Birmingham Science City already set up). It will support collaborative action and networking within the innovation agenda by business, research organisations, universities and public sector organisations. Joining instructions are included in your delegate pack, but all attendees will be invited to join the network via email.
