  1. End Punctuation An end mark is used at the end of a sentence.

  2. Question Marks? If a sentence asks a question, place a question mark at the end. Example: Does your pencil sharpener work?

  3. Exclamation Points! Exclamation points punctuate the end of sentences that show great emotion). Important! Use the exclamation point sparingly, and NEVER use the exclamation point in formal essays. Using too many exclamation points is immature. Example: I love chocolate cake!

  4. Periods. Use periods at the end of most sentences. This includes... Declarative Sentence (informational) – i.e. Japan is an island nation. Imperative Sentence (command) – i.e. Tell me about Japan. Indirect Question – i.e. John asked what people in Japan eat.

  5. End punctuation after quotations in formal writing In formal essays, the period ALWAYS goes after the citation. After Hamlet kills Polonius, he tells the corpse, “I took thee for thy better” (Shakespeare 3.4.13). Quote Period. Citation

  6. End punctuation after quotations in dialogue (prose or poetry) ONLY if you are writing dialogue, the end punctuation goes INSIDE the quotation mark at the end of a character’s speech. Examples: The girl screamed at the boy, “I’ll chase you right out of the 8th grade hallway!” He begged, “Please loan me a pencil.” Quotation mark End punctuation Quotation mark End punctuation
