GF-TADs for Europe - Introduction • Global GF-TADs • Joint initiative FAO-OIE (2004) (origin: FMD, HPAI) • Objectives: • To address TADs in their global and regional dimensions • for policy definition, coordination and harmonization • But not an operational tool for programmes/projects implementation. • Regional GF-TADs (5) • GF-TADs for Europe: Geographical scope (53 countries)

GF-TADs for Europe RSC5 Recommendations Recommendations on priority diseases • Rabies – • All countries in Europe should make rabies a notifiable disease, where this is not already the case; • Intersectoral collaboration between animal and human health authorities be reinforced, using rabies as a flag ship disease to demonstrate the value of the One Health approach; • management of stray dog populations be implemented in accordance with the OIE standard on stray dog population management (Chapter 7.7 of the OIE Terrestrial Animal Health Code), if appropriate; • Endemically affected countries consider the need to set up a regional vaccine bank for rabies.
GF-TADs for Europe Action Plan 2012- 2016 • Overarching principles: • Prevention and control of TADs = a Global Public Good • Early detection, early warning and rapid response • Importance of the roles of the Veterinary Services (VS) and their Good governance of VS • Tackling diseases at the animal source • Good national and international collaboration
GF-TADs for Europe Action Plan 2012- 2016 • Objectives: • Facilitate collaboration and maximize synergies among the countries and stakeholders in Europe • Prevent the occurrence and reduce potential impacts of animal disease events on human health, livelihoods and economies in Europe • Promote adequate governance of Veterinary Services in accordance with OIE standards • Ensure adequate funding to support implementation of disease prevention, detection and control activities, both in peace time and in crisis periods

GF-TADs for Europe Action Plan 2012- 2016 • Focus on ASF Expected results: • ASF R1 – Further spread of ASF in the region is prevented • ASF R2 – ASF in countries or zones in Europe where the situation is endemic in Europe is progressively controlled • ASF R3 – Knowledge on ASF epidemiology in Europe has increased • ASF R4 – At risk countries are better prepared
